Confidence—it’s something we admire in others, something we wish we had more of, and something that often feels just out of reach. Maybe you’ve looked at someone and thought, How do they do that? How are they so confident?

I had this exact conversation recently while sitting around an Arizona campfire after speaking at an event. A dear friend turned to me and asked, “How do you do that? Have you always been so confident?”

I paused. Because while I knew what she saw—someone who could strike up a conversation with anyone, speak on stage with conviction, and worship freely—I also knew what she didn’t see. The anxious thoughts. The self-doubt. The moments of second-guessing.

And that’s when it hit me.

Confidence isn’t what people think it is. It’s not something you’re just born with. It’s built, brick by brick, through one thing: courage.

Confidence Isn’t the Starting Point—It’s the Result

Most people think they need confidence before they take action. They wait to feel ready before they go after the big dream, speak up in a meeting, or take a leap of faith.

The truth: confidence isn’t what gets you started—courage is.

Every single act of courage you take—whether it’s trying something new, starting that business idea, or having a tough conversation—lays a foundation. And over time, that foundation turns into confidence.

Think of it like this:

👉 Every time you choose to show up, even when you’re scared, you prove to yourself that you can.

👉 Every time you take a risk, even a small one, you build trust in yourself.

👉 Every time you step out of your comfort zone, your confidence muscle strengthens.

This is exactly how I’ve built my confidence—one brave choice at a time.

Real Confidence Comes from Doing the Hard Things

Let me give you two examples where courage turned into confidence in my own life.

1. Confidence in My Faith

I didn’t start out with rock-solid faith. It was built through moments of courage—choosing to trust, surrender, and lean into what I believed, even when I didn’t have all the answers.

Each time I took a step in faith, I saw it reinforced. And over time? That courage created an unshakable confidence in what I stand for.

2. Confidence in My Marriage

Strong relationships don’t just happen. They take work—and a whole lot of courage. It takes courage to choose forgiveness over resentment. To have hard conversations instead of avoiding them. To love fully, even when things aren’t easy.

And do you know what happens when you keep choosing courage in a relationship? It builds confidence in your ability to navigate challenges together.

The same applies to business, friendships, leadership—every area of life.

So, Where Can You Choose Courage Today?

If you’re sitting there thinking, I wish I was more confident, I have good news: you’re in control of that. Confidence isn’t handed out at birth. It’s built. And it starts with one simple question:

Where can I choose courage today?

  • Is there a conversation you’ve been avoiding?

  • A risk you’ve been too afraid to take?

  • A step forward you know you need to make, but fear has been holding you back?

Choose courage. Even if it feels uncomfortable. Even if it feels small. Because every brave act is another brick in the foundation of your confidence.

And one day, someone will look at you and ask, How do you do that?

And you’ll smile, knowing exactly how you got there.
