Starting a business is exciting—until you realize there’s so much to figure out and that overwhelm feeling starts to creep up. You’re juggling ideas, trying to make money, and navigating a whole new world of decision-making. And while making mistakes is part of the process, some mistakes can cost you time, money, and momentum—three things new entrepreneurs can’t afford to waste.
That’s why, I’m breaking down the five biggest mistakes I see new entrepreneurs make (including a few I learned the hard way) and how to avoid them. Because let’s be honest—you don’t need more roadblocks, you need a roadmap. So let’s dive in.
Mistake #1: Winging It Instead of Structuring Your Time
Entrepreneurship offers freedom—but without structure, that freedom turns into frustration. Many new entrepreneurs wake up excited, start working… and by the end of the day, feel like nothing actually got done.
👉 What to do instead: Treat your business like a business. Plan your days, batch your work, and schedule time for revenue-generating activities first. When you structure your time intentionally, you’ll see real progress instead of just staying busy.
Mistake #2: Obsessing Over a Website Instead of Selling
I get it—having a sleek website feels like the ultimate sign that you’re a “real” business. But here’s the truth: a fancy website won’t make you money—talking to real people and selling will.
👉 What to do instead: Before investing time and money into a full-blown website, focus on building an audience and refining your offer. A simple landing page or even a strong social media presence is enough to get started. Sales first, website later.
Mistake #3: Creating an Offer in a Box
Too many entrepreneurs build products or services they think people want—without ever validating them. Then they launch… and hear crickets.
👉 What to do instead: Get feedback before launching. Talk to potential clients, test your idea, and refine it based on real needs. Your offer should be solving a problem people actually want help with.
Mistake #4: Trying to DIY Everything
If you’re wearing all the hats—marketing, sales, content creation, admin work—you’ll burn out fast.
👉 What to do instead: Leverage help early. Whether it’s using AI tools, hiring freelancers, or trading services, find ways to free up your time for the things that actually grow your business.
Mistake #5: Undervaluing Yourself and Underpricing Your Work
Many new entrepreneurs set their prices low because they don’t feel “experienced enough” to charge more. But pricing too low doesn’t just limit your income—it can also lead to overwork and burnout, making it harder to sustain and grow your business.
👉 What to do instead: Charge based on the transformation you provide, not just the hours you put in. Your experience, skills, and unique approach have value—own it, and charge accordingly.
The Bottom Line
Building a business is a journey, and mistakes will happen. But the more you learn before you hit these roadblocks, the faster you can move forward.
