How Couples Can Master Money Together: Unlock Financial Freedom & Harmony in Marriage

Money. It’s one of the most common sources of tension in relationships, yet it’s also one of the greatest opportunities for growth, connection, and collaboration.

If you’ve ever found yourself arguing over spending, saving, or who forgot to pay that bill, you’re not alone.

In the latest episode of Unjuggle the Struggle, my husband Shane and I pull back the curtain on our 17-year journey to mastering money together. Spoiler: it wasn’t always smooth sailing—but the lessons we learned might just transform how you approach finances as a team.

Why Money Matters in Marriage

Did you know that money remains one of the top causes of divorce? The stakes are high, but that also means there’s incredible potential to strengthen your relationship when you work through financial challenges together.

For us, learning how to communicate about money wasn’t just about balancing a budget; it was about creating a shared vision for our life and aligning on what truly matters.

The Turning Points in Our Financial Journey

In our early 20s, we were figuring out life together and quickly realized how different our money mindsets were. I was the saver, cautious and focused on rainy-day funds. Shane, on the other hand, embraced a “work hard, play hard” philosophy.

The friction was real, but it also forced us to have honest conversations about our goals, habits, and the beliefs we’d inherited about money.

Over the years, some key turning points shaped our financial partnership:

  • Early Days: We worked seven jobs between us to fund a lifestyle we couldn’t yet afford but thought we needed.

  • Learning the Game: We began involving trusted friends and family in conversations about money, opening our eyes to smarter ways to save, spend, and invest.

  • The Big Pivot: A few years ago, we decided to swap roles in managing our household finances. This not only increased our understanding of each other’s perspectives but also helped us grow individually and as a couple.

Key Lessons We’ve Learned

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from our journey that we hope can help you and your partner:

Open Communication is Everything- Schedule regular check-ins to review your finances. We used to have bi-weekly meetings over coffee, and even though our approach has evolved, communication remains the cornerstone of our success.

Leverage Each Other’s Strengths -Recognize that you each bring unique skills to the table. Maybe one of you is detail-oriented while the other excels at big-picture planning. Use these strengths to your advantage rather than letting them cause division.

Educate Yourself, Together- Whether it’s listening to podcasts, reading books, or consulting with financial professionals, continually building your financial knowledge as a couple will empower you to make smarter decisions… TOGETHER (you see a theme here in this whole “marriage” thing?! *insert winky face)

Set Shared Goals- Align on what’s most important to you—whether it’s saving for a dream vacation, paying off debt, or investing for the future. Having a shared purpose makes it easier to stay on track and resist temptation.

Give Each Other Grace- Money is deeply personal, and we all make mistakes. Instead of pointing fingers, focus on solutions and supporting one another through the learning process.

Take the First Step Toward Financial Freedom

If you’re ready to stop the money arguments and start building financial harmony, this episode is a must-listen. Shane and I get candid about our own missteps, breakthroughs, and the strategies that helped us turn money from a source of stress into a tool for freedom and connection.

Let’s rewrite the script on how couples handle money.

By working together, you can create a financial future that supports not just your goals but also your relationship.
