How to set new year goals that actually work - for yourself, your family, & your life!
As we step into a new year, there’s a sense of hope and excitement in the air. It’s an opportunity to reflect, reset, and realign with what matters most. In our household, we take this time to pause, celebrate wins, and map out the road ahead.
Setting goals isn’t just about individual ambitions; it’s about creating a vision for the entire family—together.
Here’s how we approach planning as a team, blending personal, professional, and family goals to build a purposeful year ahead.
Reflect and Reset
Reflection is always our starting point. It’s about honoring the journey we’ve been on over the past year. What did we accomplish? What challenges shaped us? Whether it’s celebrating career wins, cherishing personal growth moments, or acknowledging lessons learned from tough times, taking stock is essential.
This step is also deeply personal. For me, I think about who I’ve become over the past year and who I aspire to be moving forward. It’s a powerful moment of gratitude and honesty that sets the tone for the planning process.
Be Honest and Intentional
Goal setting requires radical honesty—both with ourselves and with the people we’re doing life with.
As we dive into planning, we talk openly about what worked and what didn’t. We identify strengths to build on and areas where we want to grow.
For example, we might reflect on relationship dynamics with family and friends: Which relationships are thriving? Which ones could use more nurturing? It’s not always easy to have these conversations, but honesty is the foundation for real progress. Together, we prioritize what’s truly important and align our goals with our values.
Plan and Act
Once we’ve reflected and set our intentions, it’s time to make a plan. This is where dreams turn into actionable steps. We break our goals into smaller, manageable milestones and put timelines in place. Whether it’s budgeting for a big family purchase, planning career moves, or simply committing to more quality time together, we create a roadmap that feels achievable.
One tool we’ve found especially helpful is writing down our goals. Did you know that writing down your goals makes you 70% more likely to achieve them? Whether it’s in a notebook, on a sticky note, or in a digital app, seeing your goals in front of you keeps them top of mind and strengthens your commitment.
Why This Matters
Goal setting isn’t just a chore or a box to check off. It’s a chance to dream, connect, and grow as a family. By planning together, we hold each other accountable and celebrate each other’s progress. It’s a tradition that not only shapes our year but strengthens our relationships.
As you enter this new year, I encourage you to start a similar tradition. Gather your family, reflect on your journey, and dream about the possibilities ahead. Remember, this process isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress and connection.
